Classical Odissi Dance Workshop

Odissi – An Introduction to sacred temple dance for beginners

For the first time the College of Vedic Studies will be hosting a practical one day workshop showcasing the classical Odissi dance form. The dance originates from the temple worship of Lord Jagganath in Puri, and has input over the centuries from several great Vaisnava saints and acaryas such as Jayadeva Goswami and Ramananda Raya.
The workshop will go through the traditional fundamentals in both theory and technique. The course will cover:
-Origin and history of Odissi dance
-Relevance in Indian culture
-Interconnection between Krsna Bhakti and Odissi
-Rhythm and music
-Mudras (language of gesture)
-Eye movements
-Stretching exercises
-Body positions in stillness and in motion
-Creative exercises in the expression of movement

We will have the honour of having this workshop being facilitated by Keli Chanchala devi dasi, an accomplished performer and teacher of classical Odissi dance, who studied under the tutelage of Sri Guru Pratap Narayan of the Venunad Kala Kendra, Vrindavan.
